Barnyard Millet Idli Recipe - Healthy Breakfast

These healthy Idlis are a perfect addition to your Breakfast routine because they are easy to make using Barnyard Millet Rava instead of Idly Rava. Addition of millets in Idlis increases the nutrition level and the health benefits that we get are innumerable.  I got Barnyard Millet Rava from Indian stores here in USA . You can use any other millet Rava that is available in stores near you. I have been experimenting with Idli batter from a long time now and this is one of the successful experiments and so sharing with you all. INGREDIENTS;   Barnyard millet rava 2 cups Urad dal 4 cups Soaked medium poha 1/4 cup Methi powder 1 tsp Water required for grinding Baking Soda 1 pinch Salt to taste 🌫 Wash & Soak Urad dal for 6-7 hours in enough water. 🌫Wash & Soak Barnyard Millet Rava in water for 2 hours. INGREDIENTS;

 Barnyard millet rava 2 cups

Urad dal 4 cups

Soaked medium poha 1/4 cup


Methi powder 1 tsp


Water required for grinding


Baking Soda 1 pinch


Salt to taste


🌫 Wash & Soak Urad dal for 6-7 hours in enough water.


🌫Wash & Soak Barnyard Millet Rava in water for 2 hours. Soak poha in some water.


🌫 Grind soaked Urad dal with soaked poha and methi seeds powder into a smooth batter.


🌫Add this to Soaked Millet Rava and mix well. Keep in a warm place and let it ferment for 8 hours /overnight


🌫 Next morning , add salt & baking soda to the fermented batter and mix well. 


🌫Add small amount of batter in greased Idly moulds and steam for 10- 15 mins without pressure in a Pressure Cooker 


🌫Serve with chutneys of your choice and enjoy this healthy breakfast❤️

Huli Pudi is one of the authentic traditional Sambar powders which has been passed on from generation to generation. This is specially made in North Karnataka. There is a wide variety of sambar powders not only within Karnataka but within South India. Each region has it's own way of adding ingredients and making them. In North Karnataka brahmin families, you can usually see two types of Sambars, firstly 'Saaru ' which can also be called Rasam with Toor dal. The consistency is thin and usually made with Tur dal and tomatoes or Tamarind. The other one is 'Huli' which is thicker in consistency and usually includes some veggies or greens.
